Understanding Nazar and Seeking Protection through the Quran and Sunnah
What is the Evil Eye?
The evil eye, known in Arabic as ‘Ayn and in Urdu as Nazar, is the harmful effect caused by someone’s jealousy, admiration, or envy. It can lead to physical illness, mental distress, sudden misfortune, or even loss of blessings. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed its reality, saying:
> “The evil eye is real.” (Sahih Muslim)
Common Signs of Evil Eye:
Unexpected illnesses or constant fatigue
Frequent accidents or things going wrong suddenly
Unexplained sadness or depression
Difficulty in studies, marriage, or career despite efforts
Children crying excessively without reason
How to Protect Yourself from the Evil Eye?
✅ 1. Recite Daily Surahs for Protection:
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite and encourage others to read:
Surah Al-Falaq
Surah An-Naas
Surah Al-Ikhlas
Morning and evening recitation provides daily protection.
✅ 2. Say Masnoon Duas for Protection:
For example:
> “A’oodhu bi kalimaatillahi at-taammati min sharri ma khalaq.”
(I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.)
— Recite this three times in the morning and evening (Sahih Muslim).
✅ 3. Praise Allah When Admiring Others:
If you see something nice in someone, say:
“Masha Allah, la quwwata illa billah”
(What Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah)
This prevents causing harm with your gaze unintentionally.
✅ 4. Avoid Boasting or Flaunting Blessings Excessively:
Islam teaches humility. Constantly showing off wealth, beauty, or success can attract jealousy. Be grateful but avoid arrogance.
✅ 5.Perform Ruqyah Sharia if Affected:
If you or your child shows symptoms of the evil eye, recite Ruqyah by reading protective verses over water or olive oil and using them for drinking, bathing, or applying.
Why Turn to the Quran and Sunnah?
Only Allah gives protection
Superstitious practices (like amulets, taweez with unknown writings) can lead to shirk
Authentic methods ensure spiritual safety
Important Note:
Never seek help from magicians or people who mix Islam with forbidden practices. True protection comes only through Allah, His words, and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
