What Are the Causes of Black Magic?

October 14, 2025

Black magic (also known as Kala Jadu or Sihr) is an ancient practice that uses dark or forbidden methods to harm, control, or influence others. In Islam, black magic is real and condemned. It involves the help of jinns or shayateen (evil spirits) to cause distress, sickness, or misfortune in someone’s life.
But have you ever wondered why people use black magic? What leads someone to commit such an evil act? Let’s explore the main causes behind black magic and how to protect yourself from it.

1. Jealousy and Envy (Hasad)

One of the most common causes of black magic is jealousy. When someone feels envious of another person’s success, beauty, marriage, wealth, or happiness, this hatred can lead them to seek harmful means like black magic to destroy what they cannot have.

In the Qur’an, Allah mentions the evil of envy:

> “And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”
(Surah Al-Falaq, 113:5)

This shows that envy is not only a feeling but can become a source of great harm when acted upon.

2. Hatred and Revenge

Some people perform black magic out of revenge or hatred. They want to see their enemy suffer and believe that dark forces can achieve what they cannot do themselves. Such acts usually backfire, as black magic invites the anger of Allah and brings destruction to the doer’s own life as well.

3. Greed and Desire for Control

Certain people use black magic to gain power or control—whether in business, relationships, or social influence. They may want to control someone’s mind, make others obey them, or gain unfair advantages. This desire for dominance often drives them toward sinful practices like sorcery and spell-casting.

4. Love and Obsession

Many cases of black magic are done due to uncontrolled love or obsession. Someone who cannot get the person they desire may resort to “love magic” (jadoo mohabbat) to make the other person fall in love with them. This is a major sin in Islam and causes severe psychological and spiritual damage to both parties.

5. Ignorance and Weak Faith

Some people fall into the trap of black magic due to weak Iman (faith) or ignorance. They may approach magicians or fortune-tellers thinking they can solve their problems, unaware that these acts involve disbelief (kufr) and reliance on the shayateen.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “Whoever goes to a fortune teller or a soothsayer and believes what he says, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood)

6. Family and Relationship Conflicts

Sometimes, black magic is done due to domestic jealousy or family disputes. A relative may feel envious of another’s marriage, success, or children and turn to magic as a way to cause separation, infertility, or constant fighting in the home.

7. Influence of Magicians and Evil Companions

Lastly, people are often influenced by evil companions or magicians who mislead them into thinking magic will solve their problems. These individuals exploit others’ pain and emotions for money, while in reality, they bring ruin to their spiritual lives.

How to Protect Yourself from Black Magic

To safeguard yourself and your family:

Recite Surah Al-Baqarah regularly at home.

Read Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) after every prayer.

Recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas daily.

Keep strong faith in Allah and avoid fear.

Seek help through Ruqyah Shariah (Quranic healing) instead of magicians.

Conclusion

Black magic is a dangerous and forbidden act rooted in jealousy, hatred, and disbelief. Its causes are tied to negative emotions and a weak connection with Allah. The best protection lies in remembrance of Allah, sincere supplication, and living a life based on Quran and Sunnah.
